Making WLANs work in healthcare and other mission-critical applications

In healthcare, as in other enterprise environments, the number of end-users connecting applications via WLAN networks is rising rapidly. Many of these new apps are bandwidth hungry. Few, if any, existing wireless networks were designed for the deluge of data coming from iPhone users, for example. Now, many wireless networks not only inconvenience users, but may themselves be safety issues.

In hospitals, a fully functional IT-network is vital for medical devices, patients and users. The risks current IT networks pose to medical device performance have now been recognized by the International Standards Organization, which has issued the ISO 80001 standard to control risk in medical IT networks, including responsibilities, planning, management and documentation. In business critical applications, reliable WLANs are essential, especially when used to support logistics, warehousing, manufacturing and retail applications.
