7SIGNAL Keeps Wi-Fi Uptime Vital for a Florida Medical Center's Patients

The Problem

To care for patients at a Florida-based medical center, clinicians rely on workstations on wheels, or WOWs, to access the center’s EMR system, document patients’ conditions, and distribute medication.

The medical center’s radiology staff, many of whom work remotely, also rely on Wi-Fi to upload MRIs and X-rays to the medical center’s archiving and communication system. With the archiving system, radiologists quickly review and direct treatment of patients.

“With Wi-Fi, we’re monitoring infusion pumps, blood pressure, and uploading information on patients’ vitals,” says the medical center’s director of Engineering and Telecom. “Our wireless network is clinical; it’s about life safety. Wi-Fi even helps patients order meals.”

The engineering and telecom director leads a team responsible for Wi-Fi infrastructure at the center’s more than a dozen facilities. The medical center uses more than 500 7SIGNAL agents and 37 sensors and has been a customer since 2022.

Staying Connected to Patients

“I’ve been with the medical center just over four years,” adds the engineering and telecom director. “During that time, there’s been a lot of construction and growth. When I joined, there were wireless issues.”

For example, before 7SIGNAL, the director says clinicians using WOWs experienced intermittent connectivity, causing delays accessing the EMR system and disrupting bedside documentation and medication distribution to patients. There was also a location on the medical center campus where clinicians were using new WOWs, on a newly opened floor. The nurses kept telling the IT team, “The wireless is very bad in this area.”

For its radiology staff, the center invested in beefy machines, monitors, and speedy internet connections to make sure radiologists working remotely could easily upload and download medical images. Yet staff regularly reported slow MRI image uploads to the medical center’s archive system, delaying radiologists’ reviews and impacting how quickly physicians treat patients. As complaints poured in about Wi-Fi, the director says his IT team couldn’t confirm if Wi-Fi was the cause of the delays.

Between the WOWs and radiologists, he says every week there were at least 10 incidents attributed to problems with Wi-Fi.

A Monitoring System IT Couldn’t See Into

Another challenge for the director was with devices embedded on the center’s patient monitoring system. The system runs a version of Windows that the medical center intentionally walls off, so the IT team struggled to diagnose the cause of roaming and authentication issues because it couldn’t install monitoring tools.

“The wireless network is extremely important; we had to improve performance and make it stable,” he says. “We use Cisco DNA to manage the wireless environment. Cisco is great for monitoring the network’s point of view. But we needed a device-side view.”

The Solution

The telecom director says that in 2022, the center turned to 7SIGNAL to understand the health of the network from the client's point of view. By installing 37 sensors, five of which IT staff move from location to location, and hundreds of agents, he and his colleagues can now monitor how devices perform in the hospital.

7SIGNAL deployed its agents on the WOWs to address Wi-Fi uptime. The moment the signal strength weakened, the agents instantly detected this—along with high transmission rates—across any hospital ward. By pinpointing gaps in coverage and issues with roaming configuration, 7SIGNAL's technology took the guesswork out of resolving issues as they happened.

For the newly opened floor at the medical center, the director analyzed the issue with 7SIGNAL and saw the new WOWs that had trouble connecting to Wi-Fi were using the same adaptive drivers. 7SIGNAL's data recommended a better driver for the WOWs' interface. By way of background, many wireless chipsets include adaptive roaming, power management, or band-steering features in their drivers. A problematic driver—one that is corrupt, for example—can make a WOW seem to have Wi-Fi issues even though the wireless infrastructure works.

The director's team changed the driver on the new WOWs to a newer, recommended driver. With 7SIGNAL's sensor report, the director proved the connection issue was not the wireless network, but the driver. Since updating the workstations to the new drivers, nurses haven't had connectivity issues in the new location.

For the radiology staff, the center's IT team placed 7SIGNAL agents on all the radiologists' laptops for instant Wi-Fi uptime reports. The agents confirm that signal strength, latency, and retransmission fall within the threshold the medical center wants. Now, when people complain about a delay in uploading images, 7SIGNAL's agents tell the engineering and telecom director if, for instance, a person's laptop is too far from the wireless network or there is a lack of space on the hard drive.

"For the radiologists, we ruled out Wi-Fi and found the archiving system app bundled each patient's full medical history when staff uploaded an MRI," says the director.

To solve clinicians' roaming and authentication issues on the patient monitoring system, the director pulls logs from his Cisco controllers to see communication between the AP and device, as well as 7SIGNAL's wall-mounted sensors. With the mix of technologies, he can see and fix the issues, so clinicians can care for patients.

The Results

According to the director, people often confuse wireless and cellular issues. But with the sensors and agents, his team can quickly address the real issues. With 7SIGNAL, he has reduced Wi-Fi trouble tickets, on average, from 10 per week to virtually none.

"In the future, we want to develop with 7SIGNAL a single pane of glass to see what's going on with our devices from anywhere, not just at the site or VPN," adds the director. "7SIGNAL is a remarkable partner that makes you feel like you're their only customer."
